« Thread started on: Dec 1st, 2010, 12:51pm »

This isn't so much a challenge, it's more like tossing down an old crossword puzzle.

Pick it up if you like, ignore it if you want. There won't be any scoring but you might impress a few folks if you can make it do something.

Anything goes. A time warp routine, sound, working meters and dials, A liza style command system, navigation computer, working star map.............

Don't worry if the code and graphics look daunting just write your own routine as an example. We can integrate ideas and code examples later.

At the end of January we will look see what has been posted.

Post in the same thread at the archives.

Nice set of sprites, thanks Rod for sharing.
Can I plug your graphics in a code I was working on.
Can we edit the images?

BTW, "end of January" that seems a lot of time.

I just read 'Change anything you like.' in the Files Site. So that may be one of the answers I was looking for.

The graphics can be changed, do what you like. I just hoped to fire someones imagination. As for timing? Yes I suppose it is a bit long. Why not aim to have whatever is being contributed finnished by the end of the holidays.

If folks want a more paractical challenge that can still be requested.

I just thought it was a bit quiet round here.

I've got the ship flying by mouse control. And I've started working on making it possible to destroy the rocks. But so far that's all I've done with it.

Anyone else want to share what they've been up to?

A lunar space docking routine might be cool, just like lunar lander. Spoken messages from Starfleet? A spiral vortex?

It does not matter what you code or how well it integrates, just have a go at something.

To encourage those that have started why not post and say you are playing.

Is this meant to be Star Trek then?

I have an idea. It may sound a little unnecessary, but could we integrate this with a program that lets you walk around and interact with stuff? There's loads of programs out there already- I'm sure there's at least one that could be tweaked to suit this one.

They needn't be amalgamated together either- just have a save function when you switch from ship mode to explore mode, data is put into a txt file and read by the other program so that it knows what to do/what level to display.

I think it would be cool, but what about everyone else?

Folks will be a little shy right now, that's how these things run. A few folks will be coding their imagination, some will never let us see the results, some will.

They aren't likely to chat about it right now.

If you want to get involved it's best to code something, it need not be integrated, it just needs to be yours and encapsulate your imagination.

When the time comes and you post it there will be plenty discussion.

I'm currently working on a program as described above- I don't know what they're called, the ones like pokemon, you know?

Anyway, it's quite simple, but plan to have doors, switches, lifts, traps... essentially the pilot will be faced with a puzzle to get through, and he has to save a victim or find an object or something like that, and get back to the ship.

It could tie in with a planet/star base system, and you're able to fly to different places and land, or in space you can get out and spacewalk...

Erm I don't know if this counts as going off subject Rod?

I have made the program above- still very basic. All the pilot can do is walk around, and plant bushes!

There's one problem, explained at the post.

Download the program

specsdude,
changing
Code:
if px+i<16 and py+n<16 and px>-1 and py>-1 then

to
Code:
if px+i<16 and py+n<16 and px+i>1 and py+n>1 then

kind of fixes that.

Also, I recommend adding line
Code:
#m, "setfocus"

just after opening window to it starts react to keys without need first to click on a window.

(the idea to quickly grow something to stop the monster is interesting one, though it's father fantazy-elvish then sci-fi ;) )

Q: "And if I took your codes and compile them, and sell them for a profit"?
A: Go ahead. I had my share of good then I coded it for fun, if you can make better use of it - please do.

I have uploaded a demo. Same thread Star Ship Adventure (unfinished)

Simulates a 3d perspective, I'm not a math expert so I know this code could be improved a lot.

There are some new BMPs, which are resizing versions of the rock. I'm doing it this way instead of using the spriteScale command, because that command doesn't free the memory and creates a new image with each scale process (little bug). Also I can add some effects this way, ie: far away objects are darker.

Note: There is no adventure yet. undecided

I hadn't envisaged a monster, but yes its an interesting idea. Perhaps I could add in one...

BTW any ideas for levels would be warmly welcomed!

thanks

I'm now working on a story version of my add-on game.

My apologies for not posting for a while...

The first level/campaign should be completed in about a week. More will follow.

The only problem I have is that I'm not a great computer artist. I need good images for use in the game, please PM me for details as I would not like to spoil the fun by giving away details smiley

The pictures would be 64x64, Windows Bitmap format.

Thanks!!

If anyone knows of anywhere I can find good background music (looping) to use in the game, please say!

thanks
