Now I am curious. Could I find and install a programming editor, and then would I setup the editor so that Just BASIC will run in it? Then the editor will let me create a program and run a program written in JB, FROM THE EXTERNAL EDITOR? Will/would this be some setting that I do just in the external editor, or is adjusting the computer's Environment Variable, PATH necessary?

I believe no

Basically it needs a way to run Just BASIC and say "Open this file" "and RUN IT"
(and there is a splash screen in JB to be closed!)
LB has commend fline parameters for it, like here
http://libertybasic.conforums.com/index.cgi?board=LB3&action=display&num=1276218571

but I think JB has not.

(threre probably some cludges possible - automating with autoIt or vbscript
Backwards thing: run JB from VBScript
or something - but it starts to look too fragile to be actually useful?)

Here there is a portable form of Notepad++ on a usb flash drive; I could probably also install a copy of Notepad++ directly to a computer. The program has a RUN menu; and then asks for user to put something in a textbox field. I would imagine that I could put in, C:\jusbasicvista\Just BASIC v1.01\jbasic.exe into this field and save this. and then I should be able to type in some code into Notepad++, click RUN, be able to choose the thing I want to run and the program code I typed in would be run by Just BASIC. Is this how the setting-up should work?

I still do not know what to do about the code formatting and color coding for Just BASIC code.

Is it really that hard to press Alt-tab to JB and hit Shift-F5 to run your code?

Ok
I have really old version of Notepad++ on my computer
(4.2.2)
I never used "run" menu,
but in a Plugins menu there is NppExec submenu
In there "Execute" item (hotkey F6)
it opens a dialog with this script
Code:
npp_save
$(NPP_DIRECTORY)\g95.bat $(FILE_NAME)
a.exe

(I really did that long time ago)
so what it does:
* it makes Notepad++ to SAVE current program
* it runs BAT file on that file
(that bat file takes current FILE_NAME and make a.exe with fortran compiler)
* then it runs a.exe

JB have no way to automatically run given program (paid version - LB - has. So it is likely by design.
You can use C or Fortran or other BASIC - but not JB.).

As for syntax coloring I just set it to VB.

I haven't run across an external editor yet where I can link to JB and run my code. I know of one for another basic dialect, but not for JB.

Where is that? In the notepadd++ editor or in the Just BASIC editor? Is it same as the Run menu of the notepad++ editor?

I believe I am missing the idea, setup external editor IN JUST BASIC, not in external editor.

tsh73,

I installed the NppExec plugin, and then I followed your menu pathway as your picture showed. The Execute... window is empty; blank. This is the end of what I can do with Notepad++. This editor is not something I am ready for; some steps of understanding are missing in my head. Maybe a different editor would be "better" or easier.

Not really on topic, but I really recommend akel pad. It looks like notepad but with a lot of options and plugins. Try it then tell me.
