exclamation Help files and Windows VISTA?
« Thread started on: Dec 7th, 2007, 8:03pm »

I keep hearing people mentioning help files, what are they exactly and how do I get to them?

I have the JB compiler and I go to help and the JB tutorial but it says I can't access them cause I have windows vista. So I don't know where to go or where to find the help files... If someone can help me with this, cause I'm fairly new at programing.

Just thought I'd edit it so people know right where to find it.

Because so many users are migrating to Vista (not by choice, I'm sure), this topic has had much discussion. If you have Vista, it simply will not access the help files! But you can remedy this situation by following Stefan's advice in post #10 of this thread: Vista.

After reading all three pages of that thread, listening to the problems others were having, and downloading the help engine from MS, I have no trouble running JB and LB on my laptop with Vista.

Some users still think you have to download the helpfiles for JB and LB... not so! The helpfiles are included with the application download... it's Vista which cannot read them, until you download and install WinHelp32.exe from Microsoft.

I started getting these messages last year with my new Laptop. I couldn't even access my own CHM help files. It wasn't until a couple of months ago that I came across this bit of information-
If you are trying to access a downloaded chm program and get the "Navigation to webpage cancelled" error, try rightclicking the file. Don't rightclick the program once it's opened, instead rightclick the icon in the Windows Explorer folder page. In the dropdown menu that appears, select Properties. Make sure the General tab is selected. At the bottom, look for this message: "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer." Press the Unblock button.
Since I don't have Vista, I can't test this out, but it does work for me. It may very well be that my problem comes not from Windows but from Norton.

The origional help file system had a security issue that allowed deletion of non system protected files just by clicking on a url link in a web page. This may be why the old help file setup has been abandoned.

Given the help file that comes with Just BASIC is from a trusted resource it is ok to open it with the WinHelp32.exe from Microsoft. Thats the only way I can get Vista to open a help file. It will not even allow me to place the .chm file in the Just BASIC program file directory. Even if I store it in a temp directory and open it with a right click and choose microsoft html help it will open but will not display any content.

For now take the easy route and download the WinHelp32.exe

Rod, is there no Unblock option on Vista that will display in the General Properties tab? I'm just curious.
Maybe someone could try this link and see if the information is helpful.

Wow! That is a very useful link for everyone who has Vista, Janet. I've already learned several new tips to improve my wireless network, shutdown, and security warnings. Everyone who has Vista should bookmark that web site!

Now, if I can just find out how to enable the robot voice in my favorite chat program.... I'm working on it!

Thanks, Janet!

Ok I downloaded the .chm to c:\temp right clicked on it and found the unblock button under properies. Then I was able to copy it to my Just BASIC program files dir. Then I right clicked and selected open with and wrongly associated IE with it. It would not open. Then I associated MS html help with it and it opens and I can see the content. However because I have downloaded the WinHelp32.exe whenever I click on help from within Just BASIC I get the old help file. Still it's progress but keep in mind everything I did may not be possible if you have not given yourself administrator rights.

Vista sucks, or at least trying to subvert Vista's security sucks. I'll be very pleased when Carl gets us a Vista compatible version.

I still believe that for now the easiest option is to get the WinHelp32.exe .

I certainly agree with your opinion, Rod. Come to think of it, I believe Ben Franklin anticipated this situation when he said:
Quote:
All progress brings change; but not all change brings progress.

I would certainly hate to be driving down the freeway when some dork cuts in front of me, and when I step on the brake a warning pops up from the onboard computer: "Are you sure you want to perform this action?" Or a soldier on patrol comes under enemy fire. When he goes to return fire, his rifle beeps at him: "Are you sure you want to do this?" A fighter pilot takes a hit from an enemy missile and pulls the eject handle, only to be rewarded with a message on his display: "Are you sure you want to eject?"

This kind of "mothering" should be left to AOL. I'm frustrated to see Microsoft adopt this "protective" attitude. It's insulting, as if we all belong in pre-school. Come on guys, if we do idiot behavior, we learn not to do that again, even if we have to buy a new computer. At least give us the opportunity to skin our knees, pick ourselves up and mumble, "Wow! Bad idea!" undecided

Just to say that my stupidity in not being able to find the "Unblock" button was because I was looking for it under the "Security" tab, how foolish. Despite the fact that its the most crucial security property MS put it at the very bottom of the "General" tab.

I have access to the Help.Chm from JBs Run menu.

Logon to the admin account and run JB.
In the Setup menu select External Programs.
Enter the name you want to use in the Run menu and then press the Browse button.
Navigate to and select the chm.

Before closing the dialog, enter hh.exe and one space preceding the chms path.
Mine looks like:
hh.exe D:\Just BASIC v1.01\justbasic.chm
The space is important.

With that done, you can access the Chm from JBs Run menu in any account on your machine.
