xx Just Basic on Ubuntu
« Thread started on: Jan 14th, 2017, 2:43pm »

Hello again. I haven't been around the forums for quite a awhile now because I went back to college then got busy with work and what-not plus I had switched to a Linux based operating system instead of using Windows which brings me to the point of this post. I really like using Just Basic and I missed using it since the OS switch, so I recently experimented with getting Just Basic to run on Ubuntu 16.04 using Wine and the experiment was successful. I installed the wine1.6, wine-gecko2.21, winetricks, and wine-mono0.0.8 packages using Synaptic Package Manager for Ubuntu 16.04 and then ran wine-config to set up the drive_c folders and then I installed Just Basic using the jb101.exe file and it installed and ran perfectly right out of the box, now I am able to access and run all the old programs I had written with JB and write new ones. So I thought I'd make a post here in case anyone else is using a Linux based OS and missed using Just Basic, it runs great on Wine and Wine is pretty much available for any Linux distro. Screenshot below. I am using Ubuntu 11pt font in the editor and letting Compiz handle the window drawing because I keep going to the left to close windows now, hehe.

I very seldom need to use the MS machines I have access to.
I've been running JB & LB on Linux for quite a few years now- it's my normal programming environment. Most modern distros have Wine as part of the basic install- if not, as you say, it's only a click away.

Glad to hear of others who enjoy the world of Free & Open Software.

Thanks Facundo. Hopefully I'll be able to get back into programming a bit, my career took a turn toward web dev instead of software dev after college.

John F, I'm glad to hear that LB runs on Linux too. I would've figured this out sooner but life has a way of getting in the way of things I like sometimes. I was just playing around with some spare time and found the old JB installer on my external and since I had Wine installed on my desktop for some games I like, I figured I'd give it a whirl. Glad I did. I don't know what version of Linux you're running but I made a .desktop launcher to launch JB from the default install directory in Wine and an icon for the launcher. You would have to replace $USER with your user name and possibly change the path.

User Image

Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Name=Just Basic
Comment=launch Just Basic
Exec=wine "/home/$USER/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Just BASIC v1.01/jbasic.exe"
Icon=jb
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Utility;Application;
Name[en_US]=Just Basic

Glad to see other Linux aficionados here in the forum!

I'm an avid Linux user both at home and at work. At home I use Linux Mint 18.1 on one of my machines with Just BASIC and Liberty BASIC running in Wine 1.6.2 (though my main machine does have Win10). For those looking to break from away from Windows, you don't have to worry about leaving Just BASIC (or Liberty BASIC) behind!

Regards,
Joe
