xx error trying to setup chm help file for usb flash
« Thread started on: Jun 22nd, 2017, 06:43am »

Failing to setup JB to open external JB Help file (chm) on a portable installation of JB on usb flash drive -

I had already a couple years ago done this setup successfully, same usb flash drive using a now dead computer. Now with the same JB on the same usb flash drive, but using it on a newer computer, trying to setup the chm help file to be opened through this portable JB, this message is all that appears:

Quote:
((Information))
Windows returned an unknown error 11 trying to RUN
F:\justbasicvista\Just BASIC v1.01\JustBASICHelp.chm
((OK))

Reason for trying to setup this new is because the flash drive takes a different drive letter than did on the old - now gone - computer.

Windows is finding it does not like your USB disc. There may be other reasons for error 11 but this was one response

Quote:
I have been reviving this error every time I plug in one of my USB flash drives. I found that if I format the drive in FAT32 the errors stop.

Can you read the file using explorer?

The helpfile for JB which is on the flash drive DOES open if I 'navigate' to it through File Explorer. Windows should not really be complaining about the usb FLASH DRIVE, since I am able to run and use other programs and files which are on the particular flash drive. The currently tried computer has Windows 10. The previous computer, now gone and dead, on which I sometimes used JB and the same copy of the helpfile, was with Windows 7.

Windows is probably protecting the system from plugin drives. Since the chm file can create other files, an index say, windows will be suspicious of it.

Can you copy it to your user data area on c: and run it from there? When you copy it, right click it and make sure under properties, general that windows has not locked the file. Unlock it if it has.

Rod,
can you be more specific, "user data on drive c" ? Where on drive c should I put the file and where on drive c should I not put the file?on Jun 23rd, 2017, 02:26am, Rod wrote:

1. So does it OPEN of you navigate to it on a flash drive in Explorer and double click?
2. What line exactly you type
(in JB \ Setup \ External programs? )
to run CHM file?

EDIT
3. actual question - if you open command line and try to execute exactly that line, what happens?

EDIT2
I just went and set it up.

Working line for me is
Code:
hh "C:\progs\Just BASIC v1.01\JustBASICHelp.chm"

- just naming CHM file brought error 11,
- trying to open it with Explorer asked if I want to save it or open it - every time!
- trying to START it did nothing good either ("file not found start <path to file>").

A: Go ahead. I had my share of good then I coded it for fun, if you can make better use of it - please do.

I am still experimenting but have run out of time. I see that the .chm file is actually opened by a Microsoft chm utility not Just BASIC. So the external program needs to call the MS chm program with the .chm as an extension. (Win 10)

On my machine the .chm opens if clicked directly but not if I use the Just BASIC external file launcher. I get error 11 message if Just BASIC tries to launch it directly.

Need to find out what the MS HTML chm .exe is

Yeh!

Thanks Anatoly, hh.exe cracked it. This is the command line to put in the setup dialog for help in JustBASIC.

Quote:
hh.exe c:\basic\justbasichelp.chm

hh.exe should be found by Windows anywhere, so it should be ok to change the path to the .chm to a usb disc.

Tell us how you get on tooanalytical.

Interesting how you are finding. Maybe differences between Windows 10 and previous-to-Windows-10.

The file itself will open without any problem if double-clicked on the usb flash drive without trying to use it through JB.

tsh73, from post #5, the external path I have is in-line with the way you show. (My folder holding JB is just named differently).

This might be another detail I need to check on. The usb flash drive with the copy of JB package is not in fast reach right now.

This is starting to look/read familiar. The usb flash drive with the copy of portable JB is not in quick reach right now, but this is something I will need to recheck. I will later recheck, readjust if necessary, and tell later...

PERFECT! Opened JB portable form from usb flashdrive, opened the external programs list, clicked on the JB chm helpfile item there, ADDED hh.exe and then a space infront of the filepath, CLOSED the dialog, closed JB, started up JB again, and then tried to run the JB chm helpfile. JustBASICHelp.chm opened with no trouble.

I should have remembered from a few years ago when I WAS given the same advice. Now, I should know better for hopefully many years?..
