« Thread started on: May 2nd, 2008, 02:04am »

I have added two new articles to the Wiki.

  1. Environment Variables
This shows one way to get Windows environment variables.
  2. The FILES Command
This shows what kind of information is returned from the FILES command.

Oh yes, I forgot to make my compliments as well.

Look at the fact that JB doesn't use API.
So Stephan had to use a bat file
with command.com and the set variable.

Good (smart) workaround.

Gordon.

LB can access the Windows API functions, which you could call a work-around too, if you consider work-around to be any command that is not included in the language.

JB has the ability to use the other two ways of the operating system to collect information, batch scripts (= DOS command interpreter [command.com or cmd.exe]) and VB script.

I have some more examples on my mind to solve some of the commonly asked questions, keep watching the Wiki.

Don't hesitate to add content to the Wiki by yourself, but be sure to test your code.

There are several possibilities:
  1. building blocks
how a JB command is used correctly
  2. custom functions
how to add useful functionality not available as native command
  3. ...

You can check out the Run BASIC Wiki, Liberty BASIC Wiki and LB Programmers Encyclopaedia for some additional hints.

sorry but not so cool as it seems.
Every time you invent workaround you waste your time
Every time you use workaround you achieve simple result by complex means - your program gets bigger and more error-prone.
For example I posted pixel fill algoritm a while ago. It works - there is a demo how to use it - but it so big noone probably used it. Even me.
Read on about using things in a not-supposed-wayhere:
Quote:
After working with this Pirate Lego set for a while, you will become a specialist in building almost anything that could be built with a general purpose set. You'll learn all the tricks-- like how to remove the patch from the pirate's eye, how to paint over the skull and crossbones, etc.

bottom line.
If you use workarounds much you better change your tool (upgrade to LB or move to some language that has things you actually need).

Q: "And if I took your codes and compile them, and sell them for a profit"?
A: Go ahead. I had my share of good then I coded it for fun, if you can make better use of it - please do.
(enjoying JB 1.01 on WinXP, netbook and desktop)

I fail to see how LB is a work around, seems more like a solution to me.

Eh?

Think about ever time someone asks like "how can i download a webpage" or something of the sort. well we come up with a way to do it that isn't built into the language. we use dll's because we can't do it "naturally" in LB.

Don't confuse dependent with work-around.

A dependent program relies on support files that are recognized by the programming language including Dlls.
A work-around is required when the language, and it's recognized support files, can't handle a task.

By your definition, every call to an external library is a work around.
