Trying to get back into learning programming again after taking time off to learn Linux System Administration for work. cool

I just set up a page on the justbasic wikispaces site. My page can be found at justbasic.wikispaces.com/thejoecole . I've also added some code for a temperature conversion program I started long ago and reworked which can be found here: justbasic.wikispaces.com/JBtemp .

I've got ideas on how I want to change the GUI to streamline the next version. Also need to read-up on stylebits for more text formatting options.

Comments, critiques, or questions are welcome! grin

Regards,
Joe

Hi Jole Cole

Welcome to our dwindling numbers here at JB forum.

Another Linux fan, ha, is it true GNU and Linux are the same thing?
This guy I know is always talking about GNU not so much Linux (though I know that is his choice OS before he made his own), I just learn last night they are supposed to be same, according to him. True?

I checked out you code and yes it was handy because another guy I know who uses Linux and never called it GNU created a cute Barista game but he uses Celsius choice 50 -80 for coffee I never have the converter program handy, so thanks 120 - 176 F degrees, great now I can make an informed choice.

Critique, yes 2 sets of buttons / controls seems two redundant but I think you are on to that (I have faith in my fellow man).

Lets review, Hi and welcome, check!
Questions and comments, check!
Critique, check!

What more can I add to our first communication?

A personal question about your avatar, the red stamp looks familiar or mystical with the symbols, design and such.

Some people would like to talk on and on about their avatar choice, some people like to hold their cards close to their chest. Which are you?

B+, thanks for the welcome! grin

Ah, Linux...
I've been using Linux since 1998, but am not one of those hard core folks that beat people over the head that Open Source is the way to go and everything must be free. As for the GNU and Linux naming battle, I just call it Linux because that's what's understandable to most people. In fact, Linux is the name of the Kernel not the operating system anyway.

One thing I'm thinking about for the next version is getting rid of the two sets of controls and replacing it with a combo box to make my temperature selections. Eventually, I'll add an about dialog box, help and maybe include Kelvin for conversion, too. Even though this is just a small utility, I want to create a "full" program package; making it all available here for others like me to learn from.

Glad you noticed my Avatar!
It is actually my name (Joseph Cole) written phonetically in Korean and stylized as an Asian seal. I lived in Korea for six years (not consecutively) while I was in the Army. I like to use it because it is unique.

Hi Joe,

I wasn't going to say, but the conversion thing could be done in a couple lines of code but practice with controls is GOOD!

So that is Korean, it reminds me of both hieroglyphs and Runic and... well anything ancient and foreign and mystical.

Do you watch and wonder with Ancient Aliens program?

B+,
I consider programming like the martial arts... there's always something more to learn and you don't get better without practice.

Yes... I do watch Ancient Aliens. It amazes me how far the History Channel has departed from actual History programming. Besides, I get a kick out of the due with the really big hair! My favorite stories are the ones they do about the Mahabharata in India.

Ah martial arts, you might know the way of the Tao, All that Yings and Yangs, all those 1's and 0's.

Where is the emoticon that bows?

Temperature conversion is, as been said before, one of the finest of the simpler exercises for practicing writing a computer program. I had fun making two of these programs, GUI included. So much can be done with whatever you imagine with the choices we have in Just BASIC. A good piece of information to look for and handle is any user input which gives any value below absolute zero kelvin, in that such input data needs to be rejected. This is one way to make a better, reliable temperature converter program.

tooanalytical,
I tried to make sure the input only accepted numbers and not other characters for conversion. I'm considering the addition of Kelvin conversion for the next update... good call on ensuring the program does not accept input or go less than zero Kelvin. That's something I'll definitely keep in mind.
