« Thread started on: Dec 30th, 2017, 11:30am »

I may be in the wrong place but this was the first BASIC programming oriented forum I was able to register in to ask a question!

I'm not new to Basic coding but it's been awhile. So to get started I downloaded qb64 and wrote a simple two line FOR x = 1 TO 10: Print x program. Clicked RUN and nothing happened.

I know nothing about compilers and such. Therefore I need to know what BASIC to use and how to get up and running?

I'm running Win 7 64bit....hoping someone can help?

Look at the links at the top of the forum. Click on the Just BASIC link and download and install it. Now you can join in this forum.

QB has a large following but I would not say it is the best entry to BASIC programming at this point in time.

So join us and put QB aside for now.

Hello kevin33,
I would say QB64 is not to the weak of the heart ;)
I went to a homepage - downloaded 98 MB ZIP file - extracted it - run, pasted code you posted
Code:
FOR x = 1 TO 10: Print x

I see a message
Code:
For without Next on current line

so I fixed it as
Code:
FOR x = 1 TO 10: PRINT x: NEXT

BUT
I was getting C-compiler errors
(because it is really complicated, BASIC - > C++ -> GCC -> EXE)

I was able to make it run with advice from QB64 FAQ
Quote:
Try to run the following TestQB64.bat batch file from the QB64 folder only:

Q: Why won't QB64 work on my computer?

Really I enjoy NOT HAVING such problems with Just BASIC.

So give us a try - install Just BASIC.
Latest version is here:
Just BASIC v2.0 beta 1 available for download!

Q: "And if I took your codes and compile them, and sell them for a profit"?
A: Go ahead. I had my share of good then I coded it for fun, if you can make better use of it - please do.
(enjoying JB 1.01 on WinXP, netbook and desktop)

Code:
FOR x = 1 TO 10: PRINT x: NEXT

You really do need NEXT for loop to work.

Works the same in JB and QB64. They are very much the same specially the language until you start doing stuff with graphic windows, then they are very different!

The IDE works much the same as JB's, so there is no need to worry about compiling details let alone batch files. Append: I tried to replicate tsh73 experience, I downloaded latest version (out today!) and after waiting 33 minutes for extraction, I clicked on the exe and ran the code above and it worked without a hitch!

JB has very good help system built-in (Use version 2.0 beta 1 because it's fixed for newer Windows) and if you are just starting out it is great specially if you want tried and tested GUI. If you remember Quick Basic, QB64 is fine specially for speedy graphics.

Kevin,
THIS IS THE WRONG PLACE TO ASK ABOUT DIFFERENT BASICs.
