« Thread started on: Jul 30th, 2005, 05:47am »

A tip is a solid, functioning, useful bit of code, or a handy piece of information. Examples of tips:

Use Setup2Go to create free installation programs for your JB apps.

Use Shalom Helpmaker to create helpfiles for your apps. It's free, too.

You can only trap keypresses and use Inkey$ in graphicboxes or graphics windows.

To use multiple exensions in a filedialog, separate them with semi colons. You can use wildcards, too. Some examples:

filedialog "Open", "*.txt;*.bas",file$
template$ = "*.bmp;*.txt;*.htm"
filedialog "Open", template$,file$
filedialog "Open", "c:\*.txt;*.bas",file$
filedialog "Open", DefaultDir$,file$

These are NOT tips and belong on a different board:

Broken code.
Ideas that haven't been tested yet.
Things that don't work properly.
Code for other languages, including Liberty BASIC.
Large programs.

This should be a board where people come to get small, working examples to help with specific problems or code routines. Other stuff should be posted on other boards.

[Admin's Note: we have a new board for sharing finished, working programs that are NOT suitable as tips called JB programs shared.]

----------------

Edit to add: I suggest that many of the threads on this board be moved to a more suitable location.

[Edit (Brad): I have moved many of the recent threads, and will continue to clean and monitor this board.]

Alyce's point is well taken. Posts that appear to be more programming discussions of interesting snippets or unfinished code will be moved to more appropriate sections.

If you aren't sure whether it's a true tip or not, you can always post it under Programming. I can assure you, if it is recognized as something that will benefit lots of people (and isn't that what a tip is all about), one of the mods or members will reply, "Hey, that's a great idea! You should post that in the Tips section."

Any code snippet should be posted and discussed first on the appropriate code board, since there is always room for improvement.

It does not make sense to post a code snippet and find that there are updates needed.

If there are no improvements suggested, we can move the thread here.

If there are improvements discussed and applied, start a new thread here to post the finished code snippet.
